And it's that expectation that leads to a worse game. Tomb Raider and The Last Story are two good examples. Online added nothing, and arguably the money and resources could either have been saved, or used to improve the main game.
Even when it's done well, like with The Last of Us, it isn't needed. Could The Last of Us have been longer, looked better or had more going on had resources not have been used online? Perhaps.
Also, I very rarely play online in a coop manner, because you lose that joy of cooperation with your friend sat next to you. NintendoLand wouldn't be half as fun, were it online. And yet people complained about it, why? Because they expect it, as you say. Not because it would add to the package, but because people expect it. And that's a bit sad.
