Final Fantasy  X was a mediocre FF game , but overall, it was  good. MGS2 was a dissapointing MGS game, but overall it was good. It happens with a lot of games.  For me, RE3 was dissapointing compared to RE1 and RE2  as an overall game, not only as a RE game. It had a badass soundtrack though. I even gave a spot to the music that plays during the credits in my top favorite tracks.

But FFX, MGS2, RE3 are still recognizable as part of their respective main series. I'm talking about gameplay, music, art direction, controls.

If a person who doesn't know RE4 sees it for the first time "resident evil" it's not the first thing that will show up in its mind.

MK8 still involves karts (with some tweaks -> anti-gravity), power-ups and circuits. Not helicopters.

Actually, FFX was pretty linear compared to the PSX games. MGS2 had a weaker story  than MGS1. Let's not mention, a different character. As far as RE3 goes, while it is more faithful to RE1 and RE2 than RE4, it still felt like it was going more into the action section.
