What exactly has Iwata done to preserve long term value?  He basically left the Wii brand to rot, and allowed the DS casual market to migrate to smarthphones.  You can make the argument that Iwata has some plan to turn things around, but that is not a dedication to preserving long-term value.

If Nintendo hadn't let go of the Wii, the 3DS would have turned into the Vita. Nintendo has only so many resources at one time...

As for smartphones, Nintendo never allowed any such migration. I'm not even sure where you would begin to support a point like that.
