In a way, he's right, but just making a change to a game that still is apart of franchise (ie NSMB is NSMB-U) does not count as making a new IP. Yes, Nintendo is playing it very safe right now. A new IP is an entirely new game that takes place in it's own universe. Nintendo hasn't added any new ones to their main list in decades. They just keep rehashing the same core titles, while people continue to buy into it. Not saying that Nintendo's way is bad, but even the greatest game becomes stale eventually. They need to focus on putting their talent towards something new, because, obviously, they have the talent; they're just too afraid to use it.
