Now, why the hell couldn't Nintendo have done that?  That annoys me.

I guess its due to costs. Restrictions between price and weight. Nintendo wanted to control the Gamepad weight to be below 500g.

Either way Nyko says their PowerPak weighs the same since it is using lithium polymer instead of lithium-ion.
