I don't think we're getting the best from Nintendo or Sega. 

The industry is too competetive, when Sony and MS entered, something had to give, so it led to Sega being driven out of the market and becoming a shadow of its former self. Meanwhile Nintendo was basically forced to pursue a low-tech, rope-a-dope strategy aimed at non-gamers to try and compete against larger multi-faceted corporations that can rely on other branches for financials when/if gaming goes sour.
