Is Nintendo even able or willing to surprise anymore?

Nintendo surprises via gameplay. They like a new gameplay mechanic and fit it into the best suited franchise. Miyamoto said.

This new Link to the Past, was probably pursued due to smaller development time.. just like Zelda OoT 3D or Zelda Wind Waker HD.

Well consideinrg they not getting much 3rd party support some western style games with mature story lines liek you seen on xbox of playstation. Hell even proper sports games, and not EA's 12.5 versions of last years games. In general a bit more variety. 

For me it's puzzles - things like Tetris, Dr. Mario or Picross. Got really hooked with Picross 3D!
