I agree with the general gist of what you're saying. They can't be compared because, although sales a similar(ly terrible), they are in completely different situations. Wii U has just launched with numerous heavy-hitters to come which we know; whilst the Vita is already in the distant shadow of its competitor, selling worse than its predecessor and with games which will push nowhere near as much HW.

I see the Wii U, if Nintendo play its cards right, being a "3DS" of the next generation. Launch a year early with a ropey start, launch Mario, Zelda etc. in its first year, drop the price just before its competitors come out and advertise the hell out of it. Then you have the Wii U with its bugs ironed out and a solid SW library for around $100-$150 cheaper than its rivals. In this economy, that can make a difference and give the Wii U the push required.

The Vita has a 0% chance of this happening.
