It gets a little bit better, but not much.
In a way the best part of the game is when you're playing as Haytham because he has more personality than a brick wall, unlike Connor.
The story missions actually get pretty good, but because there is a complete lack of side content you are essentially playing a linear game in an overly large world.
The Desmond segments get quite interesting towards the end, but the ending itself is garbage.
So, I would recommend that you stay with it. Don't force yourself to play the crappy side content or use the tacked-on hunting mechanic, just go through the story.
