If Saddam was imprisoned instead of put to death would he eventually pull a Mandela?

Well, let's compare their crimes.

Nelson Mandela: advocating equality, ordering the odd terrorist attack.

Saddam Hussein: losing a war, genocide.

 

Mandela was freed because there was a growing movement for the end of apartheid. I don't see what kind of movement could lead to Hussein being freed.
