And they say that because they want its games or becuse having a phone has always been a 'cred' thing with kids?

It doesn't matter why they ask.

 

It matters because I honestly believe it's the multimedia capabilities from the smartphones that is competitive. Game consoles have always competed against movies and other media, but portable consoles only had to compete against portable music. If that's the case, then it would partly explain why the vita is such a decline from the PSP, and why so many women aged 19-24 bought animal crossing along with a 3DS, even though they are the biggest smartphone demographic. It's not the actual gaming part of the smartphones that is competing against the handhelds.
