Sony - Should Sony buy Sega - View Post

I don't see any of the three buying Sega. Sega is a problematic purchase: the company itself is in a bad shape, the studios usually don't create the games with much potential for winnings. But on the other hand the backlog and the franchises are worth a lot. So Sega is probably very expensive but if bought needs further investments and work to bring to profitability.

Sony: Is in a problematic financial situation. With a junk-rating there is no way Sony gets the money to buy Sega. Also, even if they can buy Sega, they need more money to make them profitable. No, Sony can't at the moment take over Sega.

Nintendo: While not in debts like Sony, Nintendo is only a gaming-company and a purchase like Sega much too big for them. Nintendo would get into debts and the winnings are speculative. Also there is a big overlap on the franchises in Sega catalog and in Nintendos catalog regarding genres. Nintendo would not tap into new significant markets with that move.

Microsoft: They seem the most probable. They have the money to do the stunt. They also would profite the most from that move, as Sega has games in genres that Microsofts studios are lacking. But here is also the main problem: Microsoft probably lacks the talent to make Segas studios fit again, as their developers are in completely different fields of experience.

But aside from the hardware-manufacturers there are other options: What about Namco or Ubisoft? And - a thought from the horrors of the deepest hells - EA could possibly buy Sega.
