Well since the WiiU doesn't include a decent sized HDD I doubt that digital games ($60 ones) had any meaningful sales so far.
I know you can hook up every external HDD you can find, but no one is going to buy one at launch if he could just buy another game for it instead.

Furthermore many console games are being sold in stores first and come to digital shops a few months later.

We also haven't seen any reports about how $60 games are doing on PSN or Games on Demand (XBL). Therefore it's incredibly hard to tell. They must sell something but they're surely only account for 1/10 (likely lower) of retail sales.

I think a significant number of early customers are going to comprise of core Nintendo and gaming fans who would already have an external HDD for downlaods, and it has enough space for a single retail download anyway. I personally have 2 external HDD and 2 laptop HDDs that could be put into enclosures. It definitly has enough space for smaller digital download games.

Didn't Nintendo also say they were going to release all games digitally on the retail release date?

Well I had no way to check the games on the eShop, so Wiki is my only source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Wii_U_eShop_games

Still it was Black Friday, so the WiiU games were certainly cheaper in stores compared to the eShop and there shouldn't be any issues with software shipments. For the most part it's always smarter to buy console games in a store, as it's cheaper in pretty much every case.
