Serious. Digital downloads and streaming is the future. Steam, PSN, Xbox Live, Apple app store, Google Play, Origin etc. have shown this. Then you have the Walking Dead game actually winning game of the year at the VGAs which further shows how digital downloads have hit the mainstream gaming segment. A download only game winning game of the year even last year would have been shocking. I remember EA reps even mentioned (concerning NPD numbers on ME3 and Battlefield 3 sales I think) how NPD only shows a small part of the picture and that it's actually outdated to only use their retail numbers. |
Well since the WiiU doesn't include a decent sized HDD I doubt that digital games ($60 ones) had any meaningful sales so far.
I know you can hook up every external HDD you can find, but no one is going to buy one at launch if he could just buy another game for it instead.
Furthermore many console games are being sold in stores first and come to digital shops a few months later.
We also haven't seen any reports about how $60 games are doing on PSN or Games on Demand (XBL). Therefore it's incredibly hard to tell. They must sell something but they're surely only account for 1/10 (likely lower) of retail sales.
