There is also physical shipment option :) Future feasibility: The Wii U eShop does have Wish List feature and I read somewhere that gifting option similar to Steam and Wii Shop will return and you will even be able to purchase via Internet and get game delivered to recipient with console (Nintendo Network ID). |
Regarding current feasibility, we debated doing something similar the first year, but retail games are simply too cost-prohibitive for most people to participate: I never took a poll, but from the questions and responses I received I estimate that the average person gifts about $12-15 dollars worth of games, with the mean being a Super Nintendo or Genesis game. Thus, we've stuck to the Wii Shop, where people have the option of choosing games between $5 and $15 (although they're welcome to purchase multiple gifts for their Tiny Tim).
Regarding future feasibiliity, I hadn't heard about that feature, but I am extremely pleased to hear it. The 3DS also has a wish list, but I hadn't heard even a whisper that gifting was going to return, so I'm glad to hear that the Wii U might re-introduce it.

Steam is going to have its own separate thread. The logistics of permitting cross-platform gifting would be too demanding on me, since not everyone owns the same platform(s), and you cannot gift or receive a Wii game if you don't own a Wii.
