It's very customizable and the new start screen doesn't have to be up all the time. You can use the start screen like the start button and arrange your programs in columns just the the good old days. If you prefer desktop to apps you can ignore the fullscreen apps and use Win 8 in basicly the same way as Win 7. Aside fromt he new start screen it isn't much different.
