Is it necessary? Only if you want a more peaceful world. But if you are OK with the rather dysfunctional status quo then I guess it's not necessary.

SOmeone once said "why not try peace for a while, if it doesn't work we can always go back to war." Similarly why not try love for a while, if it doesn't work you can always go back to hate and estrangement.

Well, that's rather silly. You give up on war, and the other side doesn't, and you have a pretty huge problem on your hands.

The other thing, I suppose, depends upon your definition of "love".
