How do you solve a problem like Mario?

If I had to guess, the reason this game seems so bland is because it was these creators' first Mario. Even the Wii u game is adding things like pretty backgrounds, assymetric gameplay, Demon Souls style hints, etc. This just happens to be the creation of a newbie team.
