They also never called a MK by a number, or released 2 3D Mario games on one platform before SMG2.
Nintendo change things up from time to time and I see no reason why theyd call it Mario Kart 7, rather than Mario Kart 3DS.
In short, I expect a Mario Kart 3DS in the future.
