People want those types of 3rd party games for nintendo consoles, not nintendo handhelds. Why on earth would you expect a metal gear solid remake to sell 1mil+ when even the ps3 remake that includes more games isn't close to 1mil.
Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3d land were a good start towards the type of games the west wants. But thats all nintendo has at the moment for the west. The zelda remake was just for the hardcore nintendo fans who would have eventually bought the 3ds regardless. Most nintendogs/brain age customers are now playing the same type of games on their phones. Nintendo will start improving in the west once they start selling more handheld oriented games that don't really have good competition from ios games. 2d mario, mainline pokemon game, brand new zelda, maybe the portable super smash bros, etc.
I firmly believe that the 3ds has absolutely no chance of matching the ds's performance in the west. But its unfair to criticize current sales considering how new the system is, and because there aren't alot of big games out yet.
