Nintendo has had there consoles syncing with their handhelds since the Gamecube. It wasn't used much this gen, but couln't they send a signal from the Wii U to the 3DS and use it as a second cotronller rather than have people buy another tablet? It also has its own processor and GPU to help with the load.

They could even use it to output Wii U games in 3D.  What do you think of this?

You know, now that I think about it, offscreen play is nothing really new to Nintendo. They did with Four Swords adventure and Crystal Chronicles on the cube. If the gamecube could ouput to 5 screens, I don't see where people are getting the idea that the Wii U cannot.
