It's the wrong game on the wrong system. If it manages more than 500k lifetime (worldwide), then that will be very good already.

I doubt it. I can easily imagine it breaking a million, perhaps by the end of 2012. The reviews are good, people trust the Nintendo name, the 3DS market is growing, there isn't too much competition, and preorders are, if not great, at least decent.
