What do you mean by wii u like gameplay? The vita can be used as your tv screen for your ps3 so to speak. It is called remote play and although you cant play games using it just yet, I can confirm that it works amazing well. i was downstairs on the couch with my vita browsing through my ps3 and watching movies while my ps3 was upstairs. 

I also accessed my ps3 from work on my vita and was able to use the xmb and download content from the ps store no problem.

Being able to remotely access your console is just one of the features, and it has been done ages ago on other devices such as the PC (didn't the PSP already do this?). But adding a second screen to your setup adds another input/output to the game. It can be a asymmetric, coop/vs, map, inventory, zoomed image... whatever you can think of. Look at the DS or the WiiU demo's for more examples.
