Great software increases the sales of other games, so the idea of one game killing others is flawed. Games that fail to sell usually kill themselves.

I can see that happening to some games but not all. A perfect example is when Pikmin was released right when SSBM was released. SSB toke all of the attention away from Pikmin and garnished most of the holiday sales that year.

Sure, if that helps you to sleep better at night, then by all means pretend that this is why Pikmin didn't sell more copies.

Well then why do you think it didn't sell well? Bad marketing? No one was interested? 

It was a new IP in an unpopular genre on a platform that didn't sell that much. In all honesty, I'm surprised Pikmin did as well as it did: over 7% of GC owners got it, similar to Wii Party.
