1) Then why even include analogue sticks in the first place?

2) The 3DS is not like the Wii though. A better reference would be the Wii U as it is also a dual screen device, sort of, with a stylus and touchscreen. And with the Wii U, Nintendo is returning to dual analogues.

3) Better controls for a number of games by the looks of things.

The original point of this is that Nintendo doesn't (and indeed shouldn't) do things just because "the industry" or "conventional wisdom" says so. The circle pad pro is a fine addition as an option, but i would argue that it isn't necessary (but not unwelcome). Far too much significance was given to it after it's announcement

And it is so for many things. This generation proved that many of the things the industry clamors for are low on consumers' priorities lists ultimately, but are not unwelcome things.

And that I agree with. But considering how Nintendo wants to cater to third parties, I find the decision not to include a second analogue stick from beginning to be baffling. Developers and consumers alike were expressing their desire for it throughout the entirety of the last generation, and it's hardly an expensive inclusion.
