lol, I figured you didn't know and not doing that and not knowing what your doing really makes things tough. On my second playthrough I could have easily beat that stage without Aran, but I figured I might as well recruit him.
I also think you ment Sothe, as I did the same and i got to the point where all my other members died just looking at the enemies 
I still say play it on normal, none of this easy crap (i don't think i've played a game on easy in the last 10 years 
)
