Let's just see how this turns out. @OP, the Wii-U's pad isn't inspired by the recent popularity of tablets. Read "Iwata Asks". The Wii didn't quite achieve the amount of gamer expansion Nintendo hoped it would. They had wanted it to be as common in a typical living room as a TV is. Since the wii is dependent on a TV (which must be shared among other TV dependent devices), they decided to make a console that won't be solely dependent on a TV.
They said you can't even check a message on your wii when you see the blue light flashing without a TV.
