This is awsome news. I heard about this last year but figured it would go into development hell like the halo movie. The doctors and Casey Hudson are the producers so hopefully it wont be crap like all the other movies based on games. It is believed that it wont be based off of mass effect 1, which is good in my oppinion(i mean how would they make that into a 2 hour movie, maybe if they split it up into 2 movies they could make it)

According to the film's producers (via subscription-based IMDB Pro), the film will tell the backstory of the Mass Effect games and mankind's discovery of Prothean ruins on Mars. Based on the game's lore, humans will in turn discover FTL travel and the Mass Relays, leading to their initial encounter with the Turians and sparking the First Contact War.
