They seem to have taken too many essentially identical photos.... I want to see a better close of the back of the controller, and also... does the machine not stand upright? There seem to be two nipples on the side with the air holes, my guess is they are there to hold it in place in a stand.

They are probably to prevent the vents from being blocked by a neighboring book or something... I don't think the console stands up.
OT: I'm somewhat disappointed at the lack of any high-speed expansion slots for future proofing (unless one of those is a USB 3.0 port).

No, watching the video I am almost certain that the little nubs are meant to fit into some form of stand... if the stand has the female counterpart (that the nubs fit into) they will make sure the machine doesn't slip sideways in it.
Thanks TomaTito btw for the video and the picture.

No probs. The problem with the stand is the location of the nubs, if they where on the other side I'd be fine, but they are next to the vents. The stand would need to have extra vents or free spaces to take them into account, why go into all that trouble if you could put it on the other side?

Have you not looked at the bottom of the Wii?
The Wii stand has a space put there for it's vents, putting the nubs on that side will be an aesthetic issue, or actually, more probably a dust issue... having vents on the top of the console would collect dust even when the console isn't on.

True, there is a hole for the intake vent. And the nubs are of course more aesthetic than the Wii's rubber feet.
Appart from preventing blockage in horizontal, it can also be for the stand. You're right :P
(Hope it's enough for all the air flow)
