Nintendo doesn't like giving choices to their consumers.

Choice? As far as I know I don't have the choice to disable trophies on my PS3 or achievements on my 360 (if I could I'd do it).

You have the choice to ignore them or use them to your benefit.

You have two options to choose from, Nintendo give you none.

No, you can't really ignore them. Also: Ignoring is not a choice provided by the console manufacturers, it's a choice in people's mind. Disabling achievements/trophies on the other hand is an option not provided by Microsoft/Sony within the system. The only way to actually disable them is having your console constantly offline as far as I know.

Benefit? Only if you consider an increasing number as a benefit.

BTW: With the 3DS Nintendo plans to give people an actual option which in my opinion is even more devious than achievements/trophies: 3DS coins, which are used to unlock free content (if I understood the concept correctly).

I'm not a fan of any of these ideas (achievements/trophies/3DS coins), but on the 3DS at least I seem to have the actual option to never use it, not just to try to ignore it.

On the 360 at least you can turn off the achievement notification. So no pop ups during playing the game.
