I'm thinking Nintendo might offer a later 3DS model without the 3D.

There's a difference between selling at a profit and selling above the mainstream sweet spot. Nintendo couldn't have sold the DS at a higher price anyway, because the true systems sellers weren't out yet.

I believe they will deem it too high.

People are in shock that preorders are sold out, but everything tends to do well right out of the gate. We will see if it holds up. I hope it doesn't because price will drop sooner rather than later.
