They already have cheaper models of the system minus the 3D out right now.
They're called the DS/DSLite/DSiLite/DSiXL

And I think that $250 is just the right price for a handheld system that is as powerful as the Wii, and is also capable of displaying 3D games and movies without the need for glasses or any additional hardware, especially considering that in order to watch those same 3D movies in your living room right now, you need an expensive 3D HDTV set, a 3D capable Blu-Ray player, and several pairs of those ridiculous glasses to watch it!
Remember... the Wii could barely stay on store shelves for almost 3 years straight at the $250 price point. I predict that the fanboys and early tech adopters will gobble up the system at launch, and by the time the summer/fall rolls around, the 3DS will be the big holiday item for the mass market (read: casual) audience.
