What Rol is saying is that you flush out the trolls by burning the bridges they hide under.

So they can build new ones to continue to seek refuge?

You can't flush out every troll, if each moderator had that ability, the trolls would hardly exist in the first place (but as we see, the trolling is increasing). What you CAN do is moderate as best as possible. Many times, a poster who is trolling will receive just a warning, because even though trolling is against site rules, it doesn't always go overboard, necessitating a ban. But with the increase of the troublemakers during an already busy part of the year (the holidays), all moderators can do is hope the reasonable folk of the community report the behavior so it can be dealt with.

Trolls will always be here and relying solely on the actions of moderators during the busy periods of the year doesn't seem to be the best course of action. Why should I be standing by, if I have the ability to shut them out of some troublesome threads?

On top of that, if you take the easy opportunities to troll away from them, then the chances rise that they'll post something that warrants moderating action. I mean, if a thread is full of borderline posts, it's hard to justify a ban to just one member or a select few, but if such a post is found in a thread that is mostly filled with reasonable discussion, it stands out.

SO we must trick the trollers to flame on a trap-thread and obliterate them with the ban hammer!

Above: still the best game of the year.
