You were like 1 when DK64 came out. That game was awesome and is a REAL Donkey Kong game, more so than the shit called DKC2 and DKC3, mostly because it had Donkey Kong in them.

I never had a 64, but I had a SNES, and I played all DKC games. Just to take note, I only bought my Wii this June. Played DK64 on an emulator but just felt boring and stoped playing it. Never touched it again. I regularly replay the first 3 DKC games.
