That's a good point. I hadn't thought about used games sales effecting the popularity of a brand. It's true that while Halo 3 sold a ton many of those games were resold in some way or another and maybe even more than once. Nobody tracks used game sales so who knows how many people played it.

However you do have to consider that people that bought Halo 3 used may be likely to wait and buy Halo Reach used. It's almost impossible to guess how used games effect a a game's sequal in user sales.

We'll find out after Halo Reach hits the market if it does better than Halo 3. If it does it's very possible that used game sales helped grow the brand.
