Just fought that boss as well, and I agree with your consensus. And while Tree Beard and Thardus (from Metroid Prime) are about the same height, It's all about the camera angle. The first person mode from Prime makes Thardus look like a monster from your viewpoint, while Tree Beard just looks like another bad guy to take down.
