I don't think it is based of anything.

However there is a Wii-Dancing Game "Dancing with the Stars", which bases on a TV-Show with the same name. (Maybe you have mixed up these two ...)

It's just hard to believe some came up with a dancing game that has nothing to do with some other form of media. Glad to see it's selling well though.

DDR wasn't based on other media.

DDR was made back when people could think up original game concepts without tying it into a pre-existing franchise.

You didn't specify only this generation, and are generalizing about this generation anyway.

Games on Xbox have guns on the right side of the screen. Simple.
