I came really close to beating the elite four with just Ampharos and Umbreon at level 40, and everyone else at level 32, but I couldn't get past Karen's last pokemon (Houndoom). Koga's Muk gives me problems too, as Koga typically uses a full restore and by that point it gets so hard to land a strong hit on Muk who is constantly using shrink (or whatever it is).

While I don't like grinding I got Pidgeotto into Pidgeot so far, and Machoke has gained a few levels. Once I get everyone up to 40 I should be able to take them on no problem.

Get a fire stone to evolve your growlithe, a water stone to evolve your poilwhirl, and trade your machoke to make it evolve. Then do some more training and you will be ready. (My team was between 36 and 55 when I beat the league.)

 

Also, I just caught Ho-oh and am off to catch Mewtwo. I was no match for Red yet but I did manage to beat his pkachu though and almost beat his lapras. lol

if I evolve either my poliwhirl or growlithe I lose out on moves I want them to have.

As for machoke I just haven't gotten to it yet, nor do I know if evolving him early will make me miss out on certain moves.
