Who cares about depth in an RTS? I only care about fun, and the most fun I ever had with RTSs is when I played Red Allert1/2/YR, Warcraft2/3, RTW and of course Warlords Battlecry 3 
They might not be the deepest RTS games out there, but for me they are the best
