I do think the PS4 will be the last of the next gen to be released, but not for lack of trying on Sony's part. They rested on their laurels for too long after the PS3's release, overconfident that their ten-year plan would give them plenty of time to develop a successor. I don't doubt they're working on one now after the PS3's dismal performance, but they're playing catch-up: Microsoft and Nintendo have been working on successors since very soon after the releases of the 360 and Wii.

That's just how the industry works: release one console, start the next. Sony ignored this at its their own peril, and it's going to burn them. Either they'll release well after Microsoft's and Nintendo's next consoles or they'll released a rushed system, and they might even release a late system that's still rushed.

In any case, the ten-year plan is a failure. Sony will not be skipping a generation. The only real question is when they'll get into it.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.
