Think i read elsewhere in this thread that Nintendo had patented the Nunchuck. Surely they should have patented the Wii mote in the first place to protect it from rip-offs?

I'm sure they did, but you can only patent so much. There are a lot of "controllers" that are rectangular and have buttons on them for controllinga device. Sony probably got around any pattent issues by adding that giant glowing ball and making it round with no port on the bottom for expansions.
