Yeah its pretty old and it still looks pretty good. Sure there are better engines out there but Valve is most definatly the best game designer on the planet. Ever heard of a game called half life? or half life 2? or counter strike? or team fortress 2? or portal? i could go on and on. The fact is valve is a very good developer whether you will admit it or not and their games are the best in their respective genres.

Portal wasn't originally valve :P it was a student project that Valve took high interest in and gave them a job.  And honestly I can't name a better engine, none so versitile, none so progressive, and none lasting so long.  (If you're talking Unreal Engine 3 I'd have to highly disagree :P)

regardless valve took them on and gave them the necessary support to get the game out the door so for that im counting it as their game. besides i was just trying to make a point. There are very few if any developers that can challange Valve as far as the number of groundbreaking AAA titles go. I know i certainly cant think of any.

As for the source engine not being the best i was talking about graphics. I love the source engine and i am a huge valve supporter but lets face it it is definatly showing its age but it just goes to show you graphics arnt everything!

 

For many engines I've yet to see someone other than their own original developers use them well.  Like Unreal Engine is just about anything other than Unreal 3 and Gears looks average at best :\  and in that situation games like Left 4 Dead do look better even with an aged engine.  As for games in the same genre (shooter) the only games I'd say really look better would be Gears, MW2, and the tech demo of the Cry Engine on PS3 and 360 (was freaking sick)
