Avatar first. Megaman2 got my hopes up with his Benga avatar 
If it does seem like an odd avatar (like the Dutch Lion), I look at the colour of the username, and then the username itself. Some sigs (CGI, Gilgamesh, Darth, MM476) are recognisable instantly, others aren't.
Often, a user who I know posts in a thread with a new avatar, and until they are quoted (I always read the username in quotes), I have no idea they've posted.
