@bdbdbd: What are you talking about? The Wii has had a price drop, it won't ever go back to 250$
It's obviously not about their manufactured units anymore. Could have been if they have had any HW moving game throughout the year and those ended up not moving units, but now their projections were in risk of being off by so much that they had to do this, since the interest for the console has died and the console was seeing its worst weeks ever since launch, mainly because of the lack of games.
Poitential owners see no incentive in buying the console other than older games from 1 - 2 years ago. There has been nothing big this year. WSR didn't have an effect because the Wii itself comes bundled with the original Wii Sports. Wii Fit has been on shelves for 1 and half years and WF+ is the same game with a few added activities, so it obviously won't appeal to a whole new group of buyers.
NSMBWii is debatable, since there are already a lot of Mario fans who own the console, so the boost might not be as huge as everybody implies. Price cut was the only way out, but it won't last too long, unless they start bringing good SW to the console. If they have to moneyhat 3rd parties they have to. They are no longer in that dominant position they were last year. Even in Japan, according to the preview, Wii has been outsold by the PS3 this week.
