Just remember that financial statements must represent facts and most of these questions can be answered fairly easily. They cannot count a unit as sold if they had to send it out as a replacement unit.
However, Sony used to report produced PS2 units, and those actually could have had replacement units counted toward that. Obviously a fixed unit wouldn't, but if a unit was so busted that they must produce a new one, they could have counted that one since they produced another unit. I'm not sure if that is actually the case though, but it is something to think about.
