Is there anything i can do about side to side scrolling?

I'm betting your monitor can handle 1280, but you've never tried or just "dont' like it". My parents do the same thing. They have a widescreen LCD with optimal resolution of 1440x900, but they set it to like 960x600 which makes it look so ugly since it really isn't made for that. I just did a check and 40% of internet users use 1024x... or lower. However, 25% of the internet users still use IE6 which is more than FF3 at 17%. In 2 years, the percentage dropped 12% on 1024x768, so hopefully it will continue to drop, as you really can't fit much of anything on a screen size that small.

Beings this is a nerdy type of website, we actually have less than 10% of visitors who use a resolution smaller than 1280x...

Also, it turns out I'm in an eliete 6% group that uses a monitor above HD of 1080P standards.
