I almost forgot about Ninety Nine as Hot Mario Bros.
Ninety Nine is a famous comedy duo in Japan...

They played mario and Luigi for a while..
Sadly they were replaced by women gaming.. which seems to be better working in the advertising world..
Strong point now from Nintendo is that they use a lot of regional ads.. They really research their market and make an ad for that region... you can find a lot of tv commercials for mario games here:
