@JPL: I'm not that familiar with the quote in question, but what i did find with a quick internet search, was him saying that americans buy anything with good graphics, not quite sure how he commented DKC on that. He was skeptical during the DKC developement about it being only graphics and no gameplay (i don't know whether Cranky Kong was supposed to present Miyamoto in DKC). DKC was originally hyped for its graphics, what people thought about the gameplay, was only after getting the game
Considering the differences between japanese and western orientated games, i don't really see how the comment was offending, since that's how it goes. Graphical performance has been much more important factor in western orientated games, than it is in japanese orientated games, where gameplay and soundscheme tend to be more important factors (and characters).
I have yet to find arrogant comments from him. Mostly what he's saying in public is comments that go around the subject, so that he never reveals what he's planning.
And, by looking how his games sell, i'm having hard time to believe he's out of touch with modern gamers.
Of course you are free to say your opinion about him, just like anybody else is.
