removing wifi and card reader would save less than removing the hardware backwards compatibility, and considering a 40 gb hd costs more than a 80 right now (depending on cache size, and rpm) it would counter productive to the bottom-line price, mainly because it would require a mother board, and case redesign. they would have to sell a lot of the units to offset this disparity. Â
in either case, it is odd to have a price break this early in a consoles life and would be far more out of the ordinary to have another one.
as for pack ins not costing anything, they do, development and advertising at minimum. more to the point they lose the say 25 dollars a copy they 1st party developers make. so say 50 bucks is lost in sales for each set sold with two packins. now considering last report i read sony was still eating 100 dollar lose pre price drop per console sold, that pust american units at a 200 dollar lose, european units depending on region between a 20 dollar profit and a 50 dollar loss, and japanese units around a 120 dollar loss. now if they can get game sales up non of that matters though, they need an attach rate like early xbox 360 to offset the loss.
this is one reason i am surprised MS has not moved the hdmi over to the core and premium sooner. though elimination of the core all together would be for the best, as would eliminating the 20 gb hd, 60 and 120 makes far more sense in terms of cost per gb to unit. really by continuing with the 20gb they are just hurting future download sales.
