wait, has Nintendo flooded the market with Superman's Tea Partyz games yet??? Nintendo isn't responsible for the trash that 3rd parties produce, but they are responsible for creating both a system and games that people actually want (and pretty much an equal number of "hardcore" and "casual" games). Had Nintendo left the market, gaming would be doing horrible compared to previous generations, and we would be hearing a lot more 3rd parties anouncing they are going bankrupt than we are now.

Nintendo has demonstrated that it is possible to lower quality standards and make a lot of money while doing so.  They are not directly responsible for 3rd party content, but I would say they have, on some level,  definitely lowered the bar to allow for it.

If the only two possibilities you foresee for the current generation were Nintendo doing what it currently is and Nintendo is going out of business, then I would encourage you to think a little harder.  I do not think this generation could have gone any better for Nintendo as a company, but I wonder at what cost.

No, I don't see only two scenarios, but I don't think in any other scenario that Microsoft and/or Sony would continue to build the industry the way the Wii has in terms of profitibility & sustainability.

Had Nintendo tried to keep up with Sony/Microsoft in the tech department, they would have had leave the industry after going bankrupt, or tried to sell a console at $600-800. Since Nintendo wasn't popular, they would get next to zero sales. Why buy a Nintendo product at $600 when all the popular games are on the PS3 for the same price?

Had they made the GC2, for $250 with a standard GC controller, then it would have been rejected by the masses to the same extent the GC had. They would have nothing new to bring to the table, and the competitors would be blowing them away in terms of reasons to upgrade (new tech, internet, etc...). Nintendo didn't need another console to scrape by with a tiny userbase, and they didn't want that either. Also, 3rd parties wouldn't be able to cash in on them, since their userbase would be so small. Sure Nintendo wouldn't be out of business, but the gaming bussiness as a whole would be hurting a lot worse then they are now.

In either of those two scenarios do you really think the X360 and PS3 would have picked up all the extra slack that not having the Wii would have created?

Also, Nintendo may have made a lot of money on cheap ($$$) games, but Only Wii Play, Wii Sports, and Mario Party 8 really come to mind as "cheap" (quality) games from Nintendo. 2 out of 3 of those came bundled with hardware, and the last is an established franchise. Wii Fit (excelent hardware, big risk, lots of potential with the BB), Wii Music (lots of musical effort put into this), and Mario Kart Wii (best online experience) may have been $$$ cheap, but are definitely not cheap quality.

@other post

baiting people into breaking the rules of conduct may not be spelled out in the rules, but to then go and complain about getting the reaction you were asking for is just childish.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
